The missions of Eurocopter helicopters will have a starring role in this year’s Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) air show, demonstrating the unique capability of its rotorcraft to provide vital police, ambulance, fire and rescue support through the interoperability of equipped UK emergency services.

During the RIAT event at RAF Fairford in the Cotswolds on July 20-21, a dramatic rescue scenario will be enacted using three aircraft from Eurocopter’s mid-sized, twin-engine helicopter family: an EC145 outfitted for fire and rescue duties, a police-configured EC135 and an EC135 air ambulance.

The mid-day demonstrations will simulate a major automobile accident, with an EC145 deploying a specialist crew of the London Fire Brigade and their heavy tooling to remove the car’s roof. Monitoring of the accident scene and downlinking of real-time information to a command base station is to be provided by a Police EC135, while the Devon Air Ambulance will perform casualty evacuation from the scene.

These demonstrations are part of the Air Tattoo’s Sky Guardian theme for 2013, which puts the spotlight on civil and military aircraft operators who play an important role safeguarding life, land and liberty – many of which utilize Eurocopter helicopters in the UK benefiting from their commonality and interoperability.

“When time is of the essence, the speed and effectiveness of UK airborne emergency services in responding to an incident can often be the difference between life and death,” explained Markus Steinke, the Managing Director of Eurocopter UK. “A fleet of 50 Eurocopter helicopter from the EC135/EC145 family operate daily across the country, serving as the nation's backbone for highly demanding missions in search, surveillance, crime detection and casualty evacuation.”

Before and after performing their duties at the RIAT’s simulated accident scene, the three helicopters and crews will be at the air show’s static park display for visits.

“The daily demonstrations at RIAT will be a rare opportunity for the public to witness the airborne emergency services’ skill and bravery, often working in situations none of us would want to find ourselves in,” said Air Tattoo Chief Executive Tim Prince. “We are grateful to Eurocopter, whose EC135 helicopter is the aircraft of choice for the UK emergency services, for offering us the opportunity to salute the role of these unsung heroes.”

Eurocopter develops a new flight guidance concept for quieter helicopter landing procedures

    Marignane, France, July 15, 2013

Eurocopter has successfully demonstrated new landing procedures relying on augmented satellite guidance that can be tailored to more completely comply with the local environmental requirements.

Eurocopter has successfully demonstrated new landing procedures relying on augmented satellite guidance that can be tailored to more completely comply with the local environmental requirements.

These new landing procedures were validated with a twin-engine Eurocopter EC155 during flight tests performed as part of the company’s participation in the Green Rotorcraft Integrated Technology Demonstrator program – which is part of Europe’s Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative.
Eurocopter’s validation flights demonstrated significant reductions in the helicopter’s perceived sound footprint - consistent with predictions. They also confirmed that such automated low-noise approaches could be tailored to local environmental requirements, thereby optimizing Eurocopter helicopter operations for even the most sensitive environments.

    Eurocopter)

The flight testing involved the use of optimized noise abatement flight paths compatible with Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) operations. During the EC155’s landing approaches, vertical guidance was provided by EGNOS, the European Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS), with the helicopter’s Flight Management System (FMS) coupled to the Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS). This enabled the new approach profiles to be flown accurately, minimizing the pilot workload with an automatic monitoring of speed profiles and ascent/descent rates.
“Improving the neighbour-friendly aspects of rotorcraft continues to be a priority for us, and these new tests underscore how advanced flight guidance systems can be brought together with the latest navigation technologies to reduce perceived sound,” said Yves Favennec, Vice-President of Research at Eurocopter.
The Green Rotorcraft Integrated Technology Demonstrator program that supported Eurocopter’s EC155 flight evaluations is part of the Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative, which is Europe’s most ambitious aeronautical research program ever. Clean Sky’s goal is to develop breakthrough technologies that significantly increase environmental performance of the air transport sector, resulting in quieter and more fuel efficient aircraft and rotorcraft
Eurocopter is a founding member of the Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative, and recently joined with its other members to propose an extension of this effort during the 2014-2024 time period.

Germany’s Special Forces Command Set to Fly Eurocopter’s EC645 T2 Light Utility Helicopter

    Donauwörth, July 11, 2013

Eurocopter and the German Federal Ministry of Defense today signed a contract for 15 EC645 T2 Light Utility Helicopters (LUH) to be used by Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK), Germany’s Special Forces Command. With this order, the Bundeswehr has now joined the customer list for the most powerful model in Eurocopter’s proven EC145 family.

The contract, worth a total of 194 million euros, includes not just the helicopters but also the related equipment packages to allow KSK to carry out its special operations missions. Deliveries of the 15 aircraft begin in late 2015 and will be completed by mid-2017.

“By selecting the EC645 T2, the Bundeswehr is setting an international benchmark,” explained Wolfgang Schoder, CEO of Eurocopter Germany, during the contract signing. “They are putting their faith in proven technologies from missions around the world. Among others, the U.S. Army successfully operates a fleet of more than 270 EC145s, the aircraft on which the EC645 T2 is based. This helicopter is an economical, low-risk and quickly available solution to carry out missions for special forces that has already won out several times against international competition.”

    (© EADS North America)

The LUH contract enhances the Special Forces Command’s operational capability. The day and night missions that these helicopters will perform include insertion and extraction of special ops, fire support and reconnaissance.

The EC645 T2 LUH features a modern digital cockpit with full night vision and a 4-axis autopilot. Its communication equipment including tactical radios enables interoperability among NATO forces. Special ops teams can quickly access the aircraft thanks to its spacious cabin, which has two large sliding side doors and double doors at the rear. The helicopter’s maximum take-off weight is 3.7 tons. Troop safety is improved by the Fenestron shrouded tail rotor, particularly for flight operations in confined landing sites and whenever the rotor is turning on ground.

In addition, the mission equipment packages include fast rope system, cargo hooks and hoists. The aircraft are also equipped with pintle armament and electro-optical sensors. A self-protection system and ballistic protection further increase crew safety and aircraft survivability. The EC645 T2 is powered by two Turbomeca Arriel 2E engines and is equipped with dual-channel full authority digital engine control (FADEC).

The helicopter can be strategically airlifted in an Airbus A400M and quickly prepared for the mission upon arrival in a theater of operations.

In opting for a helicopter from Eurocopter’s EC145 family, the Bundeswehr has selected a model based on one that already performs a wide variety of missions around the world, with some 600 aircraft having been delivered to more than 40 countries. One international reference for the EC145 family’s capabilities and efficiency is the U.S. Army’s LUH program, in which the EC145, designated UH-72A Lakota, has effectively performed light utility helicopter duties since 2006. Of a total order for 322 units, more than 270 aircraft have already been delivered on time and on budget. The U.S. Army has repeatedly held the UH-72A up as an example of a successful procurement program. The EC145 has also been in operation for many years by renowned customers such as France’s Sécurité Civile and Gendarmerie Nationale, Germany’s DRF air rescue organization and the German Automobile Club (ADAC), along with many armed forces and police helicopter units around the world.

In addition, the EC645 T2 offers the Bundeswehr the potential for increased synergies: given that the German Army Aviation School in Bückeburg has for many years been using the EC135 for pilot training, Eurocopter’s family concept opens up additional benefits in training, operations and logistics for these aircraft.

Nepal’s Shree Airlines orders eight light Eurocopter helicopters

    Marignane, France, 27 June 2013

Nepal’s Shree Airlines has placed an order for eight helicopters from Eurocopter’s Ecureuil family – comprising five AS350 B3e and three EC130 T2 – for use in search and rescue, aerial work, disaster relief missions and heli-tourism. With this major acquisition, Shree Airlines becomes the largest Ecureuil operator in South Asia.

Shree Airlines, a leading helicopter operator in Nepal offering helicopter charter services, is increasing its fleet of Ecureuil helicopters after successfully operating one AS350 B3e which arrived in February this year. With the additional orders, Shree Airlines becomes the biggest operator of the Ecureuil fleet in the South Asia region with a total of nine aircraft, comprising six AS350 B3e and three EC130 T2.

The AS350 B3e – the newest evolution of the popular AS350 helicopter type – will be used in search and rescue, aerial work and disaster relief missions. The EC130 T2, being the first such helicopter of its kind to arrive in Nepal, is to perform tourism operations. First deliveries of the Ecureuil family aircraft for Shree Airlines will begin from early 2014.

    © Eurocopter, Jerome Deulin

“The Ecureuil will be a great asset for Shree Airlines as the range is well-known for its outstanding performance in harsh operating conditions,” said Eric Toussaint, CEO of the Eurocopter South East Asia subsidiary. “With our technical hub located in Eurocopter South East Asia’s Singapore facilities, we will ensure that full support to Shree Airlines is always close at hand.”
Both the AS350 B3e and EC130 T2 are members of Eurocopter's rugged and proven Ecureuil family, and also are the latest members of their respective helicopter types. The AS350 B3e, evolved from the high-performance AS350 family, outclasses all other single-engine helicopters for performance, versatility, safety and competitive acquisition and maintenance costs. It also excels in hot conditions and very high altitudes, and has a seating capacity of up to six passengers.
The EC130 T2 offers one of the most spacious cabins in its class, and also is the quietest helicopter in the market – with its Fenestron® shrouded tail rotor and automatic variable rotor speed control resulting in significantly reduced external sound levels. This rotorcraft’s large windows offer exceptional visibility and spectacular views for up to seven passengers on board. The EC130 T2 is widely used for heli-tourism, and is a common sight along the U.S. Grand Canyon – where safety and environmental compatibility are key factors for helicopter operations.
Today, approximately 5,350 Ecureuils have been delivered in 130 countries to some 1,600 operators. These aircraft have accumulated close to 25 million flight hours.

The deliveries of three new EC225s to customers in Vietnam and Malaysia further expands the fleet of Eurocopter’s workhorse helicopter deployed worldwide in demanding operating conditions of the offshore oil and gas industry.

EC225 deliveries involve the Southern Vietnam Helicopter Company (VNH South), along with Awan Inspirasi Sdn Bhd (AISB) and MHS Aviation – both of Malaysia.

“We are committed to collaborating closely with our customers to ensure that the EC225 remains an important asset for oil and gas operators. We thank customers such as VNHS, MHS and Awan Inspirasi for their continued confidence in the EC225,” said Eurocopter CEO Guillaume Faury.

    © Eurocopter, Anthony Pecchi

VNH South accepted its third EC225 this month in a handover ceremony at Eurocopter’s production facility in Marignane, France. With the expected delivery of its fourth unit next year, the company will have a total of 10 Eurocopter rotary-wing aircraft in its inventory, consisting of four Super Puma family EC225 and four AS332 L2 helicopters, along with two EC155 Dauphins. VNH South benefits from the close support of Eurocopter’s South East Asia subsidiary based in Singapore.

VNH South began oil and gas operations 27 years ago with the SA330 Puma as its first helicopter. Since then, the company has increased its fleet with more acquisitions to meet the expanding business needs, including purchase of the four EC225s in the past six years. To date, VNH South has logged an impressive 54,000 flight hours with its Super Puma fleet.

“Eurocopter has been a trusted partner through the years, providing products of great performance and high standard of support,” said Tran Dinh Nam, the Commercial Director of VNH South. “The new aircraft will no doubt enhance the capability of our fleet in carrying out the demanding offshore missions.”

Awan Inspirasi Sdn Bhd (AISB) of Malaysia has similarly taken possession of its latest EC225 from Eurocopter in France. The helicopter will now be transferred to the Eurocopter Malaysia subsidiary in Subang, where it will be painted and readied for service entry with Awan Inspirasi in September.

Awan Inspirasi currently has three EC225s in its inventory – including a leased aircraft, which will be replaced by the newly-delivered helicopter. This operator benefits from the new Eurocopter Malaysia training center in Subang, which includes a state-of-the-art EC225 full-flight simulator.

“Our company has a unique know-how as the only Malaysian service provider operating in deep waters,” said Datuk Hanif Darimi, the Chief Executive Officer of Awan Inspirasi. “We were the first to introduce the EC225 in the Asia-Pacific region, as it answers our needs perfectly. It has been a strong asset for Malaysia’s deep-water exploration and oil and gas operations.”

For MHS Aviation, the company’s fifth EC225 will be handed over in Malaysia during early July, further broadening the largest fleet of this helicopter type in Malaysia. MHS purchased its first two EC225s in 2009 and quickly increased the inventory based on the helicopters’ highly successful service. MHS Aviation’s inventory today includes a total of 14 Eurocopter-built aircraft, composed of the EC225, AS355, AS332 and AS365 types. Its acceptance of the latest EC225 closely follows the delivery of its fourth EC225 just last May.

“Eurocopter helicopters have served us well over the years. This latest aircraft will enhance our fleet and strengthen our offshore operations and offerings to customers,” commented MHS Aviation CEO Ma’som Mahadi.

The EC225 is a high-performance heavy twin-engine helicopter in the 10-11 metric ton category. It is the latest version from the Super Puma family, incorporating modern technologies. With a seating capacity of up to 19 passengers, the EC225 is recognized as the reference for offshore and passenger transport missions, as well as search and rescue (SAR) operations.
