Airbus Helicopters’ X3 high-speed demonstrator makes its new home at France’s national Air and Space museum

LE BOURGET, France, 19 June 2014 – After opening the frontiers of flight during a record-setting test program, Airbus Helicopters’ X3 is now ready for its place in history as this high-speed helicopter demonstrator is welcomed for display at the French national musée de l’Air et de l’Espace (Air and Space museum) of Paris-Le Bourget.

The X3will be exhibited in the musée de l’Air et de l’Espace’s hangar facilities at Paris-Le Bourget airport, being strategically located with other high-speed legends – Europe’s supersonic Concorde jetliners.

“We welcome this illustrious addition to France’s leading aviation museum, where our collection includes other historic rotorcraft from Airbus Helicopters’ lineage – like the S.A. 3210-01 Super Frelon, which 50 years earlier set a world speed record of 350 km/hr,” explained Catherine Maunoury, CEO of the musée de l’Air et de l’Espace and twice world aerobatics champion.  “The X3 continues a tradition of excellence at Airbus Helicopters, building on decades of innovation, research and development.”

    Anthony Pecchi - 2013)

Airbus Helicopters pursued the X3 development as part of self-funded company efforts to evolve rotorcraft that offer new ways to perform missions, fly faster and farther, and reduce operating and maintenance costs. The X3, known as a hybrid helicopter, demonstrated the company’s high-speed, long-range, Hybrid Helicopter (H3) concept.

“It is appropriate that the X3 is joining other renowned aircraft at the Musée de l’Air et de l’Espace that have helped shape the aviation industry, especially since from its conception, it showed Airbus Helicopters’ entrepreneurial drive to deliver a viable demonstrator to serve our customers’ high-speed requirements,” said Airbus Helicopters Executive Vice President Global Business & Services, Dominique Maudet.

From its maiden take-off in September 2010 to its retirement in 2013, the X3 fully validated Airbus Helicopters’ hybrid concept, using a pair of turboshaft engines to power both a five-blade helicopter main rotor and two propellers installed on short-span fixed wings.

During more than 155 hours logged by the aircraft in 199 flights, milestones achieved included a level flight speed of 255 knots (472 km/hr) on June 7, 2013 – surpassing previous high speeds reached by a helicopter.  While exploring the full flight envelope in cruise, climb, at altitude and during descent, the X3 validated this high-speed concept’s qualities – including outstanding stability, intuitive piloting characteristics, as well as low vibration levels without the need for anti-vibration systems.

The X3 also served as an ambassador of innovation during a demo tour in the U.S. in the summer of 2012 to demonstrate this advanced high-speed transportation system’s unique operational capabilities for both civil and military operators. The final stop at Washington D.C., where the X3 landed on the helipad of the Pentagon, marked a symbolic moment in the X3's frontier-pushing history. Three months later, the X3 was in the spotlight at the ILA Berlin air show where it participated in flight demonstrations and gave European aficionados an up-close look at its unique characteristics.

Airbus Helicopters foresees a wide range of potential applications for a hybrid helicopter configuration that may be developed from the X3 concept, offering an advanced, cost-effective vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) transportation system with speeds of a turboprop-powered aircraft and the full-flight capabilities of a helicopter. Its applications could include long-distance search and rescue (SAR) operations, coast guard missions, border patrol flights, passenger transport and off-shore airlift, along with inter-city shuttle services.

The combination of higher cruise speeds and excellent VTOL performance also is well-suited for military missions, such as special forces operations, troop transport, combat SAR and medical evacuation.  The X3 concept is particularly well suited for missions requiring long transit flights at high speeds, while retaining full vertical lift and hover capabilities – all at a very affordable cost.

The X3 resulted from a rapid-paced program that utilized one of Airbus Helicopters’ Dauphin helicopters as the airframe, providing a test platform with a maximum take-off weight of 5,200 kg.  In addition to the more symbolic aspect of achieving record velocities for a rotorcraft, the X3’s flight evaluations enabled Airbus Helicopters to further explore the behavior of main rotors at high speeds, while also assessing the effectiveness in drag optimization.

    AIRMED World Congress

The new EC145 T2’s emergency medical services configuration debuts at the AIRMED World Congress

Marignane, France, 3 June 2014 – As the leading helicopter manufacturer in helicopter emergency medical services – with a 60 percent market share – Airbus Helicopters is introducing its evolved EC145 T2 rotorcraft in the helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) configuration.

The twin-engine EC145 T2 is showcased at the AIRMED World Congress in Rome, Italy with new HEMS and mountain rescue equipment, presented as a full-scale mock-up developed in cooperation with the Mecaer Aviation Group equipment supplier.

Also on display is a scale model of the EC135, which is a helicopter of choice for HEMS operators in both primary and secondary missions. Approximately 25 percent of all medical emergency operations around the globe are performed with this aircraft.

    Airbus Helicopters Charles Abarr)

“With more than 40 years experience in Emergency Medical Services we offer the widest range of helicopters for HEMS operations,” explained Ralph Setz, Airbus Helicopters’ Senior Marketing Director for HEMS and Public Services. “More than 300 customers worldwide – who deploy some 1,200 Airbus Helicopters rotorcraft in this sector – trust in our products and services for their daily operations. We are constantly committed to further developing innovations to support them in this life-critical mission segment.”

To increase the EC145 T2’s adaptability in HEMS missions, Airbus Helicopters will introduce new cabin installation features that include the latest equipment definitions. An innovative outfitting option, called EMS Fixed Provisions, has been developed by Airbus Helicopters for this 4-metric-ton category rotorcraft in coordination with leading emergency medical services equipment suppliers and integrators. This provides standardized interfaces for customized hardware and systems – reducing outfitting time and providing a more rapid service entry.

After its introduction on the EC145 T2, the EMS Fixed Provisions concept may be adapted to other Airbus Helicopters rotorcraft.

The EC145 T2 is Airbus Helicopters’ newest member in its twin-engine, 4-metric-ton category EC145 product line, which has become one of the world’s most successful HEMS aircraft families. Following the EC145 T2’s certification in April 2014, deliveries will begin later this year – with four major European helicopter emergency services operators to receive the initial aircraft. Enhancements in the EC145 T2 include new Turbomeca Arriel 2E engines and the company’s signature Fenestron® shrouded tail rotor, along with upgraded main and new tail rotor gear boxes. The advanced cockpit uses Airbus Helicopters’ innovative Helionix® digital avionics suite with 4-axis autopilot.

An innovative concept developed by Airbus Helicopters for its 2.9-metric-ton category EC135 is the Multi-Functional Floor, which is tailored for HEMS customers and also applicable to other para-public operators. It eliminates the need for separate standard floors and those optimized for HEMS missions, thereby saving weight while offering a performance-focused multi-functional floor for the HEMS market.

The new floor is designed for harsh environments and demanding missions, with operators benefitting from its excellent weight/performance, robustness and impermeability. To be certified this year, the Multi-Functional Floor can be utilized on all EC135 variants, and also will be offered as a retrofit option.

The twin-engine EC135 combines a wide, unobstructed cabin with excellent performance, range and payload capacity – along with a low-noise output. Its oversized sliding side doors and rear clamshell doors enable fast loading/unloading of patients – with additional safety during ground operations ensured by Airbus Helicopters’ signature shrouded Fenestron® tail rotor. The EC135 T3/P3 is the latest upgraded version of the EC135, and is due to be delivered this year. Among the launching customers is a mountain rescue operator. The new model’s improved features include increased flight performance in hot and high environments and in single-engine situations (or OEI, One Engine Inoperative).

Both the EC145 T2 and EC135 are compliant with the stringent European medical Norm EN13718 for operational and technical requirements used in air ambulances, as well as for the interfaces and compatibility of medical devices utilized in HEMS operations.

Airbus Helicopters will be exhibiting at booth #14 during the AIRMED World Congress, to be held 3-5 June at Rome’s Palazzo dei Congressi.

Three years of successful training cooperation with Airbus Helicopters and UTair is extended with new agreement

    HeliRussia 2014

Moscow, Russia, 23 May 2014 – The successful training of pilots and technical personnel on Ecureuil-family rotorcraft will be continued in a joint Airbus Helicopters and UTair effort with the signing of an agreement at this week’s HeliRussia exhibition in Moscow.

UTair’s Personnel Training Center (PTC) provides the courses, which covers type ratings, as well as recurrent and refresher training, for both pilots and technical personnel on the AS350 B3/В3е and AS355 N/NP. All courses are performed in the Russian language, which is a key success factor and well appreciated by the Russian customers.

The UTair PTC is one of Russia’s largest civil aviation training facilities, and has been certified by Airbus Helicopters since 2011 – becoming the first company-approved external training centers worldwide that belongs to an external partner.
