Eurocopter and the Tianjin Free Trade Zone establish a partnership framework for a helicopter completion and customization center in China
Tianjin, China, 30 August 2012 In a signing ceremony today witnessed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, Eurocopter and Tianjin Free Trade Zone inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore the creation of a completion and customization center for Eurocopter’s Ecureuil family of light helicopters in Tianjin through a joint venture. |
Tianjin, China, 30 August 2012
In a signing ceremony today witnessed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, Eurocopter and Tianjin Free Trade Zone inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore the creation of a completion and customization center for Eurocopter’s Ecureuil family of light helicopters in Tianjin through a joint venture.
Eurocopter intends to expand its local footprint in China by setting up the China Completion Center in Tianjin for the purpose of completing and customizing light helicopters from Eurocopter’s best-selling Ecureuil family for the Chinese market. This Center will be designed from the start to enable future growth in accommodating other Eurocopter helicopter types. Eurocopter and the Tianjin Free Trade Zone (TFTZ), a successful partner of Airbus for its Tianjin-based A320 final assembly line, would form a joint venture for this activity, with the target of commencing operations by end 2013.
The MoU was signed by Eurocopter President Lutz Bertling and TFTZ President Feng Zhijiang, on the occasion of Airbus’ celebration of the 100th A320 assembled in China. The China Completion Center will be located adjacent to the Airbus Tianjin facility to allow for greater synergy within the EADS Group.
“The new Chinese industrial center will mark an important step for Eurocopter’s global strategy of being in close proximity to customers within key markets, while also offering tailored, flexible solutions adapted to local market requirements,” Bertling said. “Eurocopter pioneered cooperative programs with Chinese partners more than 30 years ago, and we have never stopped our efforts to develop our presence in the country. Collaboration with Tianjin is a timely and natural progression, as China’s general aviation market continues to experience massive growth.”
Bertling noted that with helicopter demand expected to increase rapidly in the coming years as China relaxes its airspace regulations, the Tianjin initiative would create a win-win situation for all stakeholders. “Eurocopter will be able to ramp up production, our customers can benefit from faster delivery and prompt services, and the local market will gain an economic boost while also benefiting from international-standard aviation skills,” he added.
“We are delighted that Eurocopter has chosen Tianjin to explore the creation of its China Completion Center,” commented TFTZ President Feng. “With Eurocopter’s expertise and experience, we will be able to develop a pool of highly qualified aeronautical talent locally that will undoubtedly boost Tianjin’s development as an aviation hub.”
The China Completion Center will handle the completion and customization of helicopters in Eurocopter’s lightweight Ecureuil family, which are highly popular worldwide for aerial and utility work, police missions, business aviation as well as heli-tourism. As the first and only helicopter to have successfully landed atop Mount Everest, the AS350 also is the undisputed reference helicopter for utility work in China, with a total of 30 currently operating in the country.
Bruno Boulnois, CEO of the Eurocopter China subsidiary, said flexibility offered through local customization of Ecureuil helicopters, along with their reduced delivery times, will be appreciated by customers. “This is another significant commitment by Eurocopter in supporting the Chinese general aviation sector’s development,” he explained. “Our company already has launched many other investments in China, including training of local pilots and technicians, the setting up of a spare parts hub in Beijing, as well as developing a country-wide network of support centers.”
Eurocopter is the leading turbine civil helicopter manufacturer in China, with nearly 130 helicopters in operation and a 40 percent market share in the sector. Being the first to establish a full-fledged subsidiary in 2006, Eurocopter China has since expanded its presence in the country, with offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Wuhan, Harbin as well as Hong Kong.

CALSTAR Orders Eight EC135's to Standardize its Fleet

Grand Prairie, Texas, August 15, 2012
American Eurocopter announced today that California Shock Trauma Air Rescue (CALSTAR), with headquarters at McClellan, CA, has agreed to purchase up to eight EC135® helicopters. CALSTAR operates nine full-time bases in northern and central California and is the largest nonprofit air ambulance provider on the west coast. With this order, it will replace its older, non-Eurocopter aircraft and will become an all-Eurocopter operator.
“We performed a very detailed review of our mission profile and our requirements so that we could begin the process of upgrading and standardizing our fleet,” explained Lynn Malmstrom, President and CEO of CALSTAR. “Once we evaluated all the aircraft, the EC135 was the best suited for our current and future mission needs.”
“CALSTAR has been a valued customer for many years,” said Marc Paganini, American Eurocopter’s President and CEO. “Lynn and his team have done a tremendous job preparing for the standardization of their fleet. They obviously did their research and their selection of the EC135 emphasizes the strength of this platform and the trust that top organizations like CALSTAR have in our products and our company.”
CALSTAR is a not-for-profit community service company that has been in operation for 28 years. The company has developed a strong culture of safety within its people, and that is something Malmstrom attributes to its high level of patient care and flight safety. “Safety is the single most important priority for our teams. We want to make sure our crews return home after each shift to be with their family and friends and that our patients get where they need to go safely.” Since its inception, CALSTAR has safely completed over 48,000 transports with no injuries to patients or crew members and to date CALSTAR has flown over 70,000 accident-free flight hours.
The EC135 is a proven and reliable platform with over 1,000 helicopters delivered worldwide. It was designed to meet the unique requirements of operators in several industries. In the U.S., there are more than 240 EC135’s in service, and it has made a name for itself in a variety of industries. With its cabin size, flexibility, performance and reliability, the EC135 has become the twin-engine helicopter of choice in the air medical services industry.
“Over the last ten years, the EC135 has accounted for over 80% of the light twin helicopters delivered to the U.S. air medical industry,” explained Paganini. “CALSTAR’s selection of the EC135 just reinforces what we already know: the EC135 has become the twin-engine platform for the U.S. air medical industry.”
The aircraft’s high endurance, extended range and outstanding maneuverability enables it to perform a full range of mission requirements, while carrying more payload over longer distances than any twin-engine aircraft in its class.

Eurocopter delivers two NH90s to France’s DGA armament procurement agency for deployment by the French Army and Navy
Marignane, July 27, 2012 The French DGA armament procurement agency has taken delivery today of its second NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopter (TTH) and seventh NH90 NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH), marking an important step forward in the largest European helicopter program launched to date. |
Photo-gallery access
The ceremony celebrating this dual delivery was held at the Marignane, France headquarters of Eurocopter, and was attended by members of the DGA; Dominique Maudet, the Eurocopter Group’s Executive Officer for France, and Vice President of Global Business and Services; along with a number of representatives from the French armed forces.
The NH90 TTH delivered to the DGA today will be handed over to the French Army Air Corps for use in training the first aircrews at the French Armed Forces Training Center (CFIA), located at Le Cannet des Maures. It is the 100th NH90 TTH delivered to date.
The French Navy NH90 NFH helicopters – designated the Caïman – represent an important element in the combat system for the service’s anti-aircraft defense frigates and multi-mission frigates. This seventh-delivered NH90 NFH will become part of the initial ship-based group based on the Aquitaine multi-mission frigate by 2013.
“This delivery of two versions of the NH90 on the same day is a major step in the historical relationship between Eurocopter and our customer, the French state,” said Maudet. “We are especially proud to play a part in the important missions that the French armed forces will carry out in the interest of the French nation with these technologically-advanced aircraft.”
The NH90 TTH helicopters will progressively replace the Pumas in service with the French Army Air Corps. The next-generation NH90 TTH has been designed to perform a wide range of missions – even the most demanding, such as utility transport and logistics, combat search & rescue, medical evacuations, special forces operations and anti-terrorism.
In its final operational configuration, the NH90 is equipped with field-tested avionics that enable the helicopter to carry out missions both day and night regardless of the weather conditions. It also has high-performance self-protection equipment, a military communication system that is interoperable for international operations, and equipment for ship-based deployment.
The NH90 NFH helicopters are ship-based combat rotorcraft, and will be assigned anti-ship and anti-submarine missions in their operation from French Navy frigates, as well as search & rescue and anti-terrorism duties at sea.
The aircraft boast a state-of-the-art weapons system that combines, as part of a high-performance platform, a package of ultra-modern electronic, acoustic and optronic sensors as well as weapons loads adapted to anti-ship and anti-submarine missions. The NH90 NFH also performs amphibious, maritime surveillance and anti-piracy missions.
The six NH90 final assembly lines currently operational in France, Germany, Italy, Finland, Australia and Spain are under the supervision of NHIndustries, a consortium jointly owned by Eurocopter, AgustaWestland and Fokker Aerostructures, which respectively hold 62.5 percent, 32 percent and 5.5 percent stakes.

Eurocopter Bolsters its Presence in Peru and Opens its First Certified Services Center
Lima, July 25th, 2012 |
The new center, based in the city of Ayacucho and opened by representatives of both companies, will offer customers and operators a close and reliable partner providing a comprehensive range of maintenance services. Operators of Eurocopter’s Ecureuil AS350 B3 will now have access to a maintenance center certified at “Operational & Intermediate” (O&I) level. The center will carry out inspections up to 600 flying hours and will replace small and large components, including gearboxes, blade and hub units, and electrical and avionics systems.
“The certification of this new service center underlines the Group’s commitment to be close to its customers and increase its range of services in a country that is growing fast,” said Alexandre Ceccacci, General Manager of Eurocopter Cono Sur. “The new maintenance center will increase helicopter availability for operators, thereby helping them to reduce costs.”
Having this new center effectively secures the maintenance work on the region’s ever-growing fleet of Eurocopter helicopters, which now totals 50 in-service aircraft. Although the Ecureuil family accounts for most of the existing Eurocopter fleet, the country’s oil and mining industries have been showing an increasing interest in other twin-engine aircraft in the Eurocopter range, such as the EC145 and the Super Puma AS332, both of which are ideally suited to combined passenger transportation and external load missions.
Eurocopter operates more than 80 authorized service centers for customers on five continents. This new maintenance center will provide the region’s operators with a service bearing all the quality hallmarks of the Eurocopter Group, which continues to reinforce its high-profile presence in Latin America.

Eurocopter's revolutionary X3 helicopter arrives in Washington for final leg of aircraft's U.S. tour
WASHINGTON and MANASSAS, Va. - July 23th, 2012 |
The tour began when the X3 made its debut at the Grand Prairie, Texas headquarters of Eurocopter’s U.S. subsidiary – American Eurocopter – which was attended by employees, elected officials, customers and industry partners. Several commercial customers from various market segments flew the X3 when it demonstrated its unique flight characteristics, which include a cruise speed of 200 knots, high rates of climb and executing high-speed maneuvers that are not routine for conventional rotary-wing aircraft. The X3 has already demonstrated a maximum speed of 232 knots at 80 percent power and a rate of climb of 5,500 feet per minute.
“We are extremely pleased to bring the X3 here to the Washington, D.C. area for the final leg of its highly successful U.S. tour,” said American Eurocopter President and CEO Marc Paganini. “I am confident that the aerospace community and military leaders here will be as impressed as all of the customers who have already experienced this cutting-edge technology.”
Several guest pilots flew aboard the X3 during its previous two stops at Huntsville’s Redstone Army Arsenal Airfield on July 9 and 10, and Fort Bragg’s Simmons Army Airfield on July 16 and 17. The X3 is scheduled to continue military flight demonstrations at Fort Belvoir’s Davison Army Airfield July 24 and 25, where guest pilots will experience the aircraft’s maturity and excellent handling characteristics firsthand. The X3 will then conclude its U.S. tour on July 26 at the Pentagon.
Eurocopter’s aircraft configuration for the X3 uses a pair of turboshaft engines to power a five-blade main rotor system, along with two propellers installed on short-span fixed wings. This concept is well adapted to missions requiring long transit flights and where speed is important, while retaining vertical lift and hover capabilities – all at a very affordable cost.
The company envisions a wide range of applications for its hybrid technology in future products, including long-distance search and rescue (SAR), Coast Guard missions, border patrol missions, passenger transport and off-shore airlift, along with inter-city shuttle services. It also is well-suited for military missions in special forces operations, troop transport, combat SAR and medical evacuation – benefitting from the combination of higher cruise speeds with excellent vertical takeoff and landing performance.
Eurocopter began X3 flight testing in September 2010 at the Istres Flight Test Center in southern France. Beyond confirming its excellent flight qualities, maneuverability, outstanding acceleration and deceleration capabilities, the hybrid demonstrator has shown exceptional climb and descent rates along with very low vibration levels – all without any need for passive or active anti-vibration systems.
Follow the X3 U.S. tour with daily news and updates on the company’s special events website events.eurocopter.com and on press.eurocopter.com

Eurocopter EC225 remains the preferred choice for fire-fighting missions in Japan as it concludes a new contract with the Tokyo Fire Department
Tokyo, 17 July 2012 |
Following the purchase of an EC225 last December after the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Tokyo Fire Department signed a contract for another EC225 this month, to add on to its Eurocopter fleet of fire-fighting helicopters. The 11-ton rotary-wing aircraft from Eurocopter’s Super Puma family will be configured to handle fire-fighting, emergency medical services as well as search and rescue missions.
Eurocopter has been providing fire-fighting helicopters to Japan since the first unit, SA3160 Alouette III, was procured by the Tokyo Fire Department back in 1967. Since then, the Tokyo Fire Department has operated a Eurocopter-only fleet, which includes four medium-sized Dauphins and three medium-heavy Super Pumas.
The EC225 is set to become a mainstay amongst medium-heavy helicopters in Japan, as five orders have been placed in the last one year by the Japan Ministry of Defense and Japan Coast Guard, in addition to the Tokyo Fire Department’s acquisitions.
“Recent experiences in Japan showed the important role played by rotary-wing aircraft during large-scale disasters,” said Eurocopter President & CEO, Lutz Bertling. “The Tokyo Fire Department, along with many other civil and government organizations, have put their trust in our products not only because our helicopters have performed outstandingly in all missions required of them, but also the fact that we are able to render prompt service due to our large local presence.”
Stephane Ginoux, Eurocopter Japan CEO, commended the Tokyo Fire Department on its capabilities, noting that “The Tokyo Fire Department is one of the largest and most well-equipped fire departments in the world, covering the Tokyo prefecture which consists of urban environment with high-rise buildings, mountainous areas at the boundaries, as well as the Ogasawara group of 30 islands located 1,000 km south of Tokyo. They also provide support for the entire nation whenever needed during crisis situations. We are honored to have been selected once again to provide for their needs.”
Together with the BK117 which was developed in cooperation with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Eurocopter leads the fire-fighting segment with 85% market share in Japan today.
